Universal Vare Charter to close next year
The Universal Vare STEM and Arts Charter School in South Philly will not pursue a charter renewal following the 2025-26 school year, officials said on Wednesday.
The Universal Vare Charter School Board of Directors will make the formal announcement on Thursday at a news conference at the school.Â
According to school officials, the decision follows a comprehensive review by the school’s Board of Directors and reflects enrollment shifts that are following a citywide trend.
“We are proud of what Universal Vare has accomplished and the contributions of our educators and families,” said Christopher Hill, Board chair. “Our focus for the next year will be on continuing to serve our scholars with excellence and ensuring a smooth and supportive transition.”
Universal Vare serves grades 5-8 and was previously located on 24th Street before the Edwin Vare Building was closed in April 2023 due to asbestos. Classes have been instructed at the nearby Delaplaine McDaniel School since then.
Universal Vare is operated under the Universal Family of Schools, which also oversees Universal Alcorn at 3200 Dickinson St., Universal Audenried High School at 3301 Tasker St., Universal Creighton at 5401 Tabor Ave. and Universal Institute at 1415 Catharine St.Â
“The challenges we face at Universal Vare reflect broader citywide experiences,” added Dr. Penny Nixon, Superintendent/CEO. “Gentrification and declining birth rates have significantly impacted school enrollment — not just here, but across Philadelphia. While this decision was difficult, we are committed to ensuring that every scholar is well cared for during this transition and that their next school experience builds on the foundation created at Universal Vare Charter School.”
