Honky Tonk shows to raise money for Ukraine
Three South Philly parks will host With Love From America: A Honky Tonk for Ukraine during the month of June.
Described as “a toe-tappin’, thigh-slappin’, rootin’, tootin’ good time,” the event features REV Theatre Company and a live band performing classic retro country hits.
All shows are free and family-friendly and donations will support Save Ukraine, an agency that rescues Ukrainian children deported to Russia and reunites them with their families.
The show takes place on June 3 at Mario Lanza Park (200 Queen St.), on June 10 at Dickinson Square Park (1600 E. Moyamensing Ave.) and on June 17 at Jefferson Square Park (400 Washington Ave.). Showtime is 7 p.m. all nights.
Rudy Caporaso, Co-Artistic Director of REV Theatre Company and the creator of A Honky Tonk For Ukraine, is joined on stage by Madison Claus and Madison Luckey, who are both University of the Arts graduates. REV Artistic Director Rosey Hay directs the piece.
Musicians include Eugene Desyatnick (guitar), Jonathan Donald (guitar), Rafael Gottlieb (guitar), Donna Renae (drums) and Carl Bright-Walck (fiddle), with Simon Bonenfant as musical coordinator.
Honky Tonk for Ukraine features classic retro sounds/song stylings of legendary artists Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Buck Owens and more, and includes hits like Hey Good Lookin’, Jackson, D-I-V-O-R-C-E, Act Naturally, plus lasso-twirling rodeo tricks, pounds of sequins, yards of fringe and really big hair.
